Claim US university tuition etc on a 1040NR

Post by NinaZ »

I have a can tax client who is filing a 1040nr (2nd only) as she worked in the US 2009 but lost her job and for 2010 has only unemployment insurance collected in the us. she also attended a us university. Owes US $818 on the income. I'm hoping to reduce/eliminate this with the education but don't know how.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Since she is in the US 2009 and all of 2010 she should be able to file a 1040 instaed of a 1040NR thereby taking the claim of tuition fees on the 1040, I do not see it being available on a 1040NR.

Since she is still filing in Canada -- yes she should be -- aggressively reducing her US tax may not be that important, since it will also lower her US tax credit on her Cdn return.

But at JG sez, 1040 (all Cdn citizens can file 1040 regardless of any other rrestriction), will do the job.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
