I am a Canadian, and I am working on my TN for a permanent job in US. I am planning to stay in US for couple of years. My wife is working in Canada now, and she is going to join me in 2 months.
On my first payroll slog, other than federal and state tax, I found social security and medicare tax. I would like to know under what circumstance I can benefit from these programs?
several scenarios,
1, if I work until 65 with TN, and them retire to Canada. Am i eligible to claim SS after I retire? If not, can I apply for some tax exempt since I am paying for sth I will never benefit from?
2, if I start my GC process, after 65 I may retire either at US or to Canada. Am I eligible to claim SS after I retire?
Thanks a lot!

You need to be sure to get 6 quarters of SS contributions (about 18 months of work). Once you get these (and work 10 years total in US and canada), you will collect some SS when you retire, regardless of where you live, or your US immigrtaion/citizenship status.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
