Dual citizen needing to file US taxes for last 11 years

Post by rdiks »

Hello,

Can you let me know what the process and requirements are for a USA/Canada dual citizen who hasn't filed a US tax return for about 11 years? This is for my wife and her income in each of those 10 years has been <$5000 CAD each year. She has not had residency or income earned in the US during this time.

Thanks

IRS accepts backfiling the past six yearas, including 8891 for RRSPs with no problem -- if you come forward before they find out.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

Thanks for the info! We'll get on filing the last 6 years. Will the IRS ask about the 5 years before that?

Not typically. They can't hold you responsible for more than six years unless there was some SERIOUS fraudulent activity uncovered -- not simple neglect.
