2yr TN having tax problem at border with us-purchased car.

Post by jhuang1213 »

Hi, there,
I am not sure if this is the correct forum for my question but hopeful somebody had the experience or advices I need. I had moved to US for 2 years and bought a car in States. Last weekend, I drove it to border to extend my TN (plan to stay overnight at friend's house in Canada before heading south again). At the border I was told that I had to pay tax on my car purchase even though I just stay overnight and return to US next day and have no intention of moving back. At the end they just sent me back to States side and did TN renewal process since I refused to pay the tax. I am wondering that means I can not even have short trip to Canada with US-purchased car?

Thanks
Jin

This should not have occured. The prohibition on bringing a US-bought car inot US without importing it applies only to Cdn residents.

So, you absolutely have to have a US DL. Otherwise your Cdn DL is proof that you live in canada, and thus cannot drive a US car into Canada without formally importing it.

Then they had no right to demand tax from you. Next time this happens demand to speak to a suprvisor.
