Canadian working in the US -> Rent paid in the US

Post by stanford_postdoc »

Hi there,

I am a Canadian citizen working in the US, and for Canadian tax purposes, I am considered a resident of Canada.

For my US employment, I obviously need a place to live in, so I rented an apartment in the US. I was wondering if I can claim the rent paid in the US as some sort of employment expense, or deduction, on my Canadian tax return.

Let me add that during 2009 I visited Canada two times, but stayed in Canada for about 63 days.

Thanks in advance.

Why are you considered Cdn resident? You live and work in US.

Your rent is not deductible on any return.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
