I was in the US for 10 years till end of 2006. Then i moved to Canada and been here since then.
Back in early 2001 i bought shares of sun microsystems. I sold them in Oct 2009. Now i have to file my taxes.
I changed my address with the online trader only in Feb'2010 :(
i have a couple of Qs regardng that
1. The online trader does not have the record for what date it was bought and at what price. they lost it ! so what cost basis do i use. I guess the date and use it or i calculate the basis based on when i moved to canada ( nov 2006?)
2. Do i need to include this in 1040 NR for the US or this needs to be included in only the Canadian taxes ? may be i need to file because i changed the address only in 2010 ? I assume i need to use Schedule D if im filing 1040 NR
i have another question about some IRAs that i sold which i will post another Question for that.
Thanks for all your help

[dude] THIS IS WRONG !!! TDAMERITRADE SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME TO CHANGE IT AND I ALSO SHOULD HAVE !!

[dude] This is irrelevant because the cost basis will be the date i moved to canada, the price on that day. But would i convert this to cdn$ based on nov'2006 price of USD-CAD or today's USD-CAD price ?

[dude] No this should be included only on the CDN return.

I don't appreciate bumping, bud.
Your shares are not taxable in US. They are only taxable in canada, based on teh price when you moved back to canada only.

After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
