Canadian Resident working for a US Company

Post by teddie »

I'm a Canadian citizen working and living in Canada. I do work for a US company. They have issued me a 1099 with my SSN. The SSN was required to work for them.
I was planning to file a Canadian Tax return as self employed. What do I need to do to let the IRS know that I'm a Canadian and will not be filing a tax eturn? Is there a form I must complete for the IRS?

Since no IRS tax was withheld, you technically do not have to file. However, a 1040NR, indicating that you did not work in US would not be a bad idea. This is business income earned in canada, with no fixed base in US, and is not taxable there.

Thank you for your quick response. I found 2 1040nr forms online. Can I use the 1040nr-ez? I have no dependents.
