Prior year donations on 1040

Post by Livonian »

1040 allows prior years donations. Does it allow donations made while resident of Canada?

I belive 1040 only allows prior year donations in narrow circumstances.
In any event, Cdn donations can only be used against 1/2 of reported Cdn income.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

OK.... again, you can only deduct donations made in previous years if your were not allowed to deduct them in the year they were mude due to income limits, no other reason.

And, since you now have added more information, your US charity donation can only be used on your CDn return against US-source income.

So unless your donation was only partailly used in a previous year due to limitation (and not due to filing a statndard deduction), it cannot be used on a future year.

And you can only use it on a Cdn return if you report sufficient US income. It can be carried forward in canada with no special reason needed.

Any other tidbit of information you'd care to add?
