Nelson,
I've been poring over the various posts on the topic and believe that I understand the filing requirements, but would very much appreciate a quick review of my take-aways as it's quite possible that I've misunderstood or overlooked something.
I'm a dual citizen who has been living in Canada my entire life. I've been contributing to an RRSP account since 2005 (all cash) and only become aware of the filing requirements around registered plans in June. I included this account in my 2008 TD F 90-22.1 filing in June 2009, but have yet to backfile my 8891s.
I intend to file four pairs of form 8891 and 1040x (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008), mailed in one envelope to the IRS in Philadelphia.
2005 form 8891 will read as follows:
Name/ID: self-explanatory
1,2,3,4: self-explanatory
5: Beneficiary
6.a: No
6.b: Blank
6.c: Yes
7.a: Blank
7.b: Blank
8: year-end $CDN value multiplied by noon BoC FX rate
2006-2008 form 8891s will read as follows:
Name/ID: self-explanatory
1,2,3,4: self-explanatory
5: Beneficiary
6.a: Yes
6.b: 2005
6.c: Blank
7.a: Blank
7.b: Blank
8: year-end $CDN value multiplied by noon BoC FX rate
There appears to be no place to indicate the year. Should I just write "Tax Year 2005", etc, at the bottom?
All four form 1040xs will read as follows:
Name/ID: self-explanatory
A(status): self-explanatory
B(period): self-explanatory
C(expl.) : I am amending Form 1040 to attach Form 8891, with no changes to income, deductions, or credits.
Sign/date: self-explanatory
Have I missed anything?
Kindest thanks for the immense service your posts have provided to all of us,
Quimby
