Canadian Living in the USA with GC

Post by power »

Hello just found this forum very interesting...my family and I received our GC in 2005 and have filled 1040 tax return and have filled CDN tax return as well but not reporting any US income. We filled a zero tax return in Canada since we have no CDN income. We are not sure if we are going to remain in the USA due to the situation. My question is should we have reported the US income to Canada? We never gave up our CDN residency due to the fact that we were never 100% certain on staying in the USA. Thank you

You should not be filing a ZERO return in canada. If you are non-resident, you should be filing (or not filing) as such.

But to file a Cdn return as if you live there, but report no world income as you are obligated to do, is just plain wrong.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
