US J1 - Canadian PR - TAX Question

Post by nano »

Thankyou for very useful information on this forum.

However, I have a question that I can't find the good answer for.

Currently I'm a Russian citizen living in Russia. I've recently received a Canadian immigrant visa. At the same time I have a job offer (research) in the US, and J1 visa.

The question is if I enter Canada for only a short time (~5 weeks to get a PR CARD) and then leave Canada for US, DO I HAVE TO PAY CANADIAN TAXES?

I don't intend to obtain any property or bank accounts in Canada, nor medical insurance or any other residential ties with Canada after my entry by the time I'will be returning to canada after 2 years.

Thank you in advance for help!

No. "Landing" in canada simply to activate your Cdn Permanent resident status does not constitute establishing residency for tax purposes.

Until about 2002, tax residency in canada was a requirement to maintain PR status, now it is not.

What you must do is establish residency (actually live in canada) within the next 3 years, otherwise your PR status will be revoked.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
