I'm a Canadian citizen living in the US. I want to open a Canadian bank account as a place to keep some money outside of the perils of the US financial system. I am not planning to move back to Canada in the near term.
I was told I could open an account in person (e.g. at a branch in Vancouver) so long as I had a valid Canadian passport, however RBC tells me I have to be planning to move to Canada to open an account.
Does anyone have experience with this scenario who might provide me some guidance?[/img]

Most Cdns keep their account active when they leave US, and thus don't need to open one as a non-resident, so your situation is somewhat unusual.
But I'm sure that some, who closed their accounts, and then later wanted to re-open one are out there....I've never heard of ANYONE not being able to open an account in Canada for any reason, especially in person.

After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
