US citizen working in Canada

Post by dirtleg »

I searched your forum but couldn't find the answer, so my apologies if this is a repeat question. I"m a us citizen that worked in Canada last summer for a couple months. I paid all Canadian taxes including healthcare etc. Am i able to recoup this money even though the company I worked for hasn't sent me any tax forms or is it even worth it?

Recoup what money?

he firm will send you forms (T-4) soon; even if they don't you are responsible for filing a tax return in canada reporting that income (for the province you worked in). So I trust you made sure the Cdn firm knows where you live.

You might get some income tx back (or you may owe more). ONly if you made very little money wouk you get your EI or CPP premiums back -- you still need to file return. Money you paid for 'healthcare' is an expense, not a tax.

And you must report this income on your US return as well
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
