Do I need to file 2004 taxes?

Post by ajay40 »

Hello,

Thank you in anticipation!

I along with my family landed last year in Canada and came back to US on H1 after 4 days to continue with my job. We do not have our healthcare card. I DO have a PR card, SIN number and a bank account with 0 amounts in it. I used my friend’s residential address.

Do I need to file my taxes for 2004?

Thanks again!

You need to file US taxes, of course, and report world income to IRS.

You would only need to file Cdn taxes if you made any Cdn wages (other than bank interest) or established residential ties (which you have not).

Filing a Cdn tax return is no longer considered mandatory for Cdn PRs, if no primary ties (house and/or spouse in canada) exist.

I'm unsure as to the purpose of 'using your friend's residential address', other than to 'pretend' to live in Canada.

Do not do this. First, this is lying (or worse, fraud), and second, current Cdn immigration laws do not require that you live continually in Canada to maintain your status, so you would be lying for nothing.

Thanks Nelsona!
Your feedback, indeed, is very useful information for me and my family!
I had used my friends residentional address so that the PR, SIN and the bank information can be mailed at his residence.

Rgds!
