RRSP Overcontribution... need help!

Post by ckl_88 »

Hello,

I made a mistake last year and need a little help.

The scenario:

My wife made about $15000 in RRSP contributions in the first 60 days of 2007. One was 5000 to her own rrsp and the other 10000 to a spousal rrsp. Her contribution limit was only 5000. After speaking with the CRA, the easiest method was to withdraw 10000 and incur the 2000 withholding tax, then file a t746 in the following year to get it back.

So now I have received a T4RSP and here's where my confusion begins:

The T4RSP has the following information:

The recipient name has my name on it. (Issued to me?)
1. Box 22 - 10,000
2. Box 30 - 2,000
3. Box 24 - Y

So whose tax return does this t4rsp go on?

I'm assuming that it goes on my wifes tax return. So I went about trying to fill out a T746 and here's what I entered:

Line 2 $15,000
Line 3 $5,000
Line 4 $10,000

Line 7 ?
Line 9 ?
Line 10 $10,000
Line 11 $10,000

The 2 lines with the questions marks are the lines where I'm having trouble with. On line 7, it's asking for the amount on box 22 of the T4RSP (which is 10000), on line 9, it's asking for any amounts to include in income that your spouse or common-law partner withdrew.

If I put 10000 in each of those boxes (7 & 9), the amount in line 10 goes to 20000 which doesn't seem right.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks.

This is a cross-border tax forum.

What does this have to do with US taxes?
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
