Tax Filing Firms with 8891?!

Post by juf2m »

Hi there,

I am a Canadian Citizen and 2-year US Permanent resident living in Maryland.

Last year, my husband (a US Citizen) and I filed jointly in the US using Turbo Tax. I have no Canadian income, just an RRSP. Form 8891 is part of Turbo tax, so that was fine, and I have been mailing in the 90-22.1 myself separately as it goes to a different location.

This year, we wanted to file our taxes with a company like H&R Block because they are not too expensive, are near our house, and our taxes are a little more complex this year so we wanted to be able to discuss the results with a live person. The problem is, H&R Block does not have form 8891 (which boggles my mind), and neither do several other firms I've tried.

Is it possible to work with one of these companies and just print out the pdf of 8891, fill it in and include it with the return (I believe this is the current version)?: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8891.pdf

OR does the company have to actually have the forms themselves for it to work? I have searched high and low for a cross-border tax accountant in DC or Maryland but have come up empty so far.

Thanks for any advice you might have!

Most people just send in a 1040-X with the 8891 attached, at some point after your return is processed.

H&RBlockheads are terrible at doing anything but the simplest tax return. Why not just stick with Turbotax.

Unless you hire an accountant, the person you get at HRB will be no more able to deal with your 'more complicated' situation, than the person that works at the gas station... they may even be the same person.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
