Best US and Can Tax Prep Software?

I am wondering if people on this forum can offer their opinions on the best US and Canadian tax prep software for those filing both in Canada and US? I have seen some people reporting problems with TurboTax for returns with foreign tax credits, 8891, 3520, etc. Is this true? I believe I also read that it is advisable to use the CD versions rather than the web-based versions of software. Why is this the case?

I have used both Turbo tax and taxcut in US, with the same success. I suggest you pick the one that matches up with your accounting s/w Money or Quicken.

For canada I love ufile.

Any reason to avoid the web versions of any of these products? Is it better to download the actual software and use that?

ufile is web-based.

I have no experience with web-based US s/w

Does Turbotax and Taxcut provide 8891 forms for efiling ?

I used to efile using taxact sw without 8891 forms and then amend using 1040X and send 8891 forms later

Looks like Turbotax has 8891, but not Taxcut:

and then select the "Forms" file tab. You can also download list of all forms available on taxcut:

Turbotax has 8891. taxcut does not.

if that tips you into turbotax, that's fine.

Continuing the duscussion on the software's for filing taxes in Canada as an Emigrant, found that there is nothing in Quicktax which helps me to pro-rate my deductions & credits based on the no. of days I lived in Canada.

Nelsona, you had experience with Ufile.ca. Can you throw some light if Ufile has that ability?

Quicktax users, if i m wrong please let me know where Can I put the no of days to get a pro-rated deduction & credit scenario?? I m a Quicktax fan and never used Ufile??

Yes, it does work in Ufile, and should work in quicktax cd version. It worked when I did it 8 years ago.
