RRSP in USA since 1982

Post by rkg1051a »

Thanks for all that info on this forum.
Moved to USA in 1982. Never filed any form regarding RRSP. After reading thrugh the forum I intend to do the following with some help:

File 1040X/8891 for 2002,3,4,5,6 with a PART II statement that "No income, dedutions, credits, taxes being ammended. Only election to defer income on RRSP till disbursed being requested"
Box 6a - Yes
Box 6b - preveious year (2001,2,3,4,5) or should it be year 1982
Box 8 - balance at the end of 1040X year.

File 1040X/8891 for 2001 with a statement in PART II
Box 6a: ??? (Yes or No since this is the first year being amended)
Box 6b: ??? (If Yes which year)
Box 6c: ??? (If No, should this box be checked?)

I know there has been a lot of discussion on this topic but I am still a bit confused about the low level details. I will appreciate any help
Thanks :?

You can only use 8891 fore 2004 and later. For years before that you can only file an Rev Proc 02-23 statement.

The earliest you can make the election is 2002.

Your 8891 for 2004 should yes, 2002

Thanks for the quick response.
2002 to 2006 makes only five years. I read somewhere that I should amend 1040 for the last 6years !!

I suppose you could make the election for 2001.

Since RP 02-23 only came out in 2002, and since you did nothing for 25 years, what's the point.

The crucial year is 2003, where you must abide by Notice 2003-75, or be forced to file form 3520 for that year.

Is a 1040X needed to file a Rev. Proc. 02-23 statement or a 8891?

:D Finally I got confirmation from IRS of acceptance of my 1040Xs for the prior 6 years. I couldn't have done it without the information and guidance I received from this forum.
Thanks Again

Note that confirmation of receipt of these, and any 1040-X is not always the case, and lack of confirmation would not have meant anything.

But it is becoming more common to receive these.
