Part year dependent?

Post by Alex »

I had a new baby born in late 2012. Can I claim her as a dependent on my US or Canadian tax for 2012? (I am USC, CDN resident, with NRA spouse)

If so, will I have to prorate my claims in some way based on when in 2012 she was born?

Also, do I need to obtain Social Security and Social Insurance numbers for her in time for my filings?

Thank you!

You can claim a child born anytime in 2012 (or before) on your 2012 tax return in US, and Canada (although canada doesn't have dependant credit.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

and yes you need SSN and SIN for the child to file correctly. In US this will be worth $1000 if you file right.

Thanks very much for your help.

It could take a while to get her SSN (maybe not until after June 30). Can I apply for it and then put "Applied" for her SSN?

If not, what do you suggest: omit it and forget it, omit it and amend once SSN comes, or file extension?

Thanks again!

I would amend later. You need to get all your other filings in, 8891, fbar etc, so you might as well get that doen now, and just file for the $1000 later.
