Hi Nelsona,

I was not referring to the taxes to CRA. I was wondering how would I pay capital gains to IRS?

calculating long term/short term capital gains

Hi, I have two questions regarding the stocks of an american company. 1. I purchased stocks of an American company using Canadian dollars from July 2003 until Jan 2005. All that time I was in Canada. I moved to the US in Jan of 2010. So I have held the shares for more than 2 years to use the long te...

buying a cottage in Canada as a US resident

Hi Nelsona, Looking for your expert advice here. I am a Canadian citizen working/living in the US. I along with two other friends (both Canadian citizens) are planning to buy a cottage in Ontario. This is purely an investment at this time. I may purchase my friends share at a later date, but for now...

About T1-adj - when I file that - do I completely exclude the W2 wages then? Or just the extra income that I reported?

I know it was a mess.. But I had to report to CRA as I was technically a resident of Ontario for the entire tax year 2009. I did not have permanent "abode" in the US. Don't I have to report that income from the foreign sources? 1040X meaning since I had files 1040NR - I have to refile that...

more income reported on T1 and 1040NR

Hi Nelsona, When I moved to the US in 2009 I was given $5000 from my company as a miscellaneous income. I got a sheet of pay indicating all my deductions and net amount was sent to me via cheque. When I got my W2 for 2009 - I never saw this amount - so I honestly told CRA nad IRS that I had received...

If I file 1040 in the US, how do I file my T1 in Canada? What happens to the RRSP deductions? For the entire year 2009, I was either living in Canada 10 months or living at a hotel here in the US.

which US return to file as a non residnet and reporing RRSP

I am filing US Tax. I moved to the US in Nov but lived only in temp housing until the end of the year. However, I have to report the US income while filing T1. The question is while filing ( I don't know which one to file 1040 or 1040NR or dual income ) the US return, do I have to report my RRSP inc...

Hi Nelsona, I am about to file taxes in the US first and then file T1 in Canada. Since my departure date is 01/01/2010 - my T1 will like like any other previous years - which is good. Nelsona,

What's the rational of withdrawing from RRSP earlier when one moves to the US?

Thanks Nelsona. I am also planning to buy a house in Texas and a condo in Toronto from the sale of my house in Toronto. With regards to that, I was thinking of establishing a company to take care of the rental property in Toronto. Now as a non-resident canadian, can I do that? In other words, can I ...

Thanks Nelsona, for the 2009 tax year, I will file a regular T1 and 1040 in the US. My wife will not pay back everything in the tax year 2009. For 2010 tax year, we will have T1 as a departture year and my wife will have the remaining HBP as income for that year ( and since she will not be working i...

Hi Nelsona, Thanks for all the information that you have provided so far. I moved to the US in Nov and have arranged to stay in temp housing until Dec 31, 2009 (as you suggested). I will move to "permanent" housing (rent on my own) from Jan 1st, 2010. I have not yet "surrendered"...

Thanks for the suggestion Nelsona. However, all of us are leaving together by the end of the month. But we have a house which maintains our residency in Canada. If we don't rent it out until January 1st, will that suffice? I will lose two months income but that maybe worth it. Both my wife and I hav...
