new greencard holder - state tax returns for second year

Post by bhagavat »

we are still in the process of transitioning between Canada and US (Illinois). I am confused that if I file a NR - IL state return but a resident fed return, will I jeopardize greencard status? I have a rented premises in IL but go there once a month. income sources are outside the US.

appreciate any advise.

As long as you file your 1040 correctly, your state residence is not important. You are not yet living in IL, so you should only file a NR return for that state, and only if you have income from that state.

So I would not be filing anything for IL.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
