Canadian citizen moved to USA - need advice on TFSA, RRSP, mutual funds, and 2025/2026 taxes filing
Hi everyone,
I'm a Canadian citizen (single) who moved to Wisconsin, USA in September 2025 on a TN visa. Looking for guidance on my situation, particularly around my Canadian accounts going forward.
My situation:
- Employed in Canada from January to September 2025 (T4 income)
- Started working in the USA in September 2025 (W-2 income)
- Still hold accounts at RBC: RRSP, TFSA, non-registered investment account with mutual funds, and GICs
- Have not yet notified RBC of my non-resident status (planning to do that this week)
My plan for 2025 tax returns:
- File Canadian emigrant return myself using TurboTax Canada + manual Form T1161 (mail it in)
- File US non-resident return (1040-NR) using Sprintax
- I believe I don't need to file FBAR, Form 8938, or any PFIC/trust forms for 2025 since I'm a US non-resident for the full year
My concerns for 2026 and beyond:
- I understand my TFSA will be treated as a foreign trust by the IRS (Forms 3520, 3520-A)
- I have Canadian mutual funds that may be classified as PFICs — these are in my TFSA, in RRPS and in non-registered investment account
- I plan to close the TFSA before December 31, 2026
- I plan to hire a cross-border accountant for my 2026 return
Questions:
1. Is my 2025 filing plan correct? Anything I'm missing?
2. How urgently do I need to sell the Canadian mutual funds in my non-registered account? Does every day I hold them in 2026 increase my PFIC exposure?
3. For the mutual funds inside my RRSP — do I need to switch these to US-listed ETFs, or are they protected from PFIC rules under the treaty?
4. Is there any benefit to closing the TFSA now (March 2026) vs. waiting for GICs inside it to mature later in 2026, given that I'll need to report it for 2026 regardless?
5. Anything else I should be doing right now that I'm not thinking of?
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
