step one letter

my wife is sponsoring me for perm res in cAnAdA. Im about to get my step one letter. Does this mean Im allowed a work permit? If so, what jobs am I allowed to do? I was told that HR Canada reviews job offers and may determine that Im taking a job from a canadian. Is this true?

You can apply for an open work permit when you receive first stage approval.

The information you have about HRDC is basically correct, but does not apply to you once you have your first-stage approval.
