dual citizen moving back to Canada, tax advice needed on money and home

Post by magicaldeck »

Hi,

I am a dual citizen planning to move back from the US to Canada. I have some money in certificates of deposit, and own a home as my primary residence with a room being rented out to a student. I am wondering about the preparation I should do before the move. Is it necessary to sell the home and early-withdraw all my deposits before the move to avoid extra taxes? Selling the home can be tricky given I am doing a job search in Canada and may have to move on short notice when I get a job offer. What would be the cons of selling my investments after my arrival in Canada?

Moving back to Canada doesn't pose as much problems as moving to US.
You don't have to do anything before moving; Canada will consider all things sold and bought the day you become Cdn resident, so there really is no need to actually sell before moving.

You might want to sell any "losing" investments before establishing CDn residency, as US capital losses won't do you much good in either country.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
