dual tax employment question

Post by Journadian »

On 2016 I worked in canada for 2 months and the rest in USA as a PR (as I just immigrated to USA). So on my 2016 taxes I was unaware that I had to do the waiver and the canadian company was told from the cra that they had to withhold 15% tax for the 2 months. Anyway they paid the cra and also deducted that amount on my pay cheque. I have the feeling that the tax is on them not me, but i decided to take the lost because of my ignorance.

Come 2017 taxes, the company gives me the t4-nr with the taxes deducted on the total amount. So I'm having HR B to do my taxes and the rep says to account for the tax and report it on my USA taxes. I'm unsure whether to do it or not as technically the cra didn't have me pay the tax. Should I report?

thanks

Not sure what you did in 2016, but in any event it looks likeyou didn't handle it right in 2016, and are are getting wrong advice from HR B as usual.

Toolate for me to answer any of this until may. See my signature.
