Hello,
I am a Canadian citizen and work in the U.S. as a Registered Nurse on a TN visa. Last year I must have switched my w4 to exempt when I accidently filled out an online w4 form and changed the address. It was a very stupid mistake and I have learned my lesson...As a result, I have not been getting taxed enough and will be owing money. I have never had this happen and usually get refunds which is what I was expecting this year. The amount is high enough that I don't think I can pay it all at once unless I max out all of my Canadian credit cards. I have been advised that there are options to do installments or get 120 day extension. I just want to find out if this is a viable option or what options I have. I don't want to negatively impact my visa status or privileges of visiting the U.S. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can get an extension to FILE your taxes, but the interest and penalty meter starts running on April 16th.
The IRS guide explain what happens when you under pay your taxes for one year, and what you can do to remedy this over time. None of this would affect your immigration status.
Did you not notice your pay stub was a little light in the tax department?

After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
