Filing US taxes after TN status has expired?

Post by us2ca »

Most of the questions I've seen around pertain to how to file your taxes while you are currently working in the US on TN status.

What happens after the TN status expires and you return home to Canada?

Do you still have to file US taxes?

I started a 401k and Roth IRA, and have not closed them yet.

I have read here: https://www.sunnet.sunlife.com/files/ad ... o_RRSP.pdf that you can leave them open in the US.

However, does this mean you have to file US taxes? If so, what form?

How do I go about finding a tax professional in my city who is familiar with both US and Canadian tax issues? Do they typically offer free initial consultations?

Thanks!

You have to file a final return, usually a 1040 to cvover your last year, and that should be it.

Any 401(k) withdrawal would have correct tax withheld, so no ned to file anything in future. Roths would not be taxable for the most part.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
