Confused - what should my next step be.

Post by confusedcanadian »

Hi,
I'm currently working in the US under a visa. I am a Canadian citizen and since moving to the US in 2008 I did not file taxes in Canada since I was doing US taxes. But I'm not sure if I did the right thing by not doing taxes in Canada. Also I got married to a someone who lives in Canada this year, so should I file taxes for 2015 since I plan to move back at the end of 2016? or should I wait to start doing taxes in Canada. Also should I file back taxes in Canada or file for a NR71. Please help.......
Thank you for your guidance.

You are still non-resident. the errors you made in the past are long-forgotten.
Do not file any Cdn return or form until you actually return. Just make sure that your income is mentioned on the front page of your spouse's Cdn return, and that they indicate married. And that you file as married, not single on your US return.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
