Form 8854 For 2012 Expatriation

Post by underwhelmed »

I relinquished by green card in May of 2012, and have been patiently waiting for the new version of form 8854 to become available (the most recent version available on the IRS website is for 2011, and only is for people who expatriated between June 4, 2004 and December 31, 2011).

I have called the IRS, but the rep says she doesn't know when the new form will be out, and that they cannot answer any questions re 8854 because it is outside their scope (too complex).

Does anyone know when the new form will be available?

Also, can anyone confirm that the relevant date for the balance sheet information is the date the green card was turned in (rather than the date that 8854 is filled out)?

Thanks.

Since the new versin is in draft form, obviously it will be released sometime soon.

You'll just have to wait.

Your expatriation date won't be affected.

There are the draft instructions.

Surely you had already found these!

Besides, there is no longer any need to look for these in draft or prior year formats, they are now official (released last week):

Thanks for posting the correct links, Nelsona. The links I posted worked 2 days ago - but no longer.

I'll take your corrected information and update my post on the http://isaacbrocksociety.ca website (a great resource for general information on US citizenship for American's living outside the US itself).
