US GreenCard holder attending university in Canada

Post by path »

We are Canadian citizens living and working in the US (GreenCards).
My daughter will be attending university in Canada this fall.
She does not want to loose her GreenCard status.
What are the rules that govern a person in this situation?
Does she have to apply for any special visas with the US government?

thanks in advance

Typically, any GC leaving US for longer than 6 months should gete re-entry permit I-131. But given that students are generally not gone for that long, and that they are usually not recognized as residents where they go to school (keeps her state dl etc, no prov healthcare), she may not need any.

The I-131 would be useful if, say, she decided to stay in Canada (or travel abroad) during her winter and/or summer breaks, which might push her time spent outside US to many consecutive months).
