Canadian Parental EI and UCBB

Post by Toronto_Guy »

My wife moved to the US on 14 July 2014. She does not have US source income. She is receiving her UCBB EI before she left Canada. She wish to file 1040NR for 2014(her choice). Does she have to include her EI and UCBB on her 1040 NR from July 2014 to December 2014 ?

1040NR requires only US-source income, so nothing from Canada should be reported.

If YOU are filing 1040, and she does not join you on it, this makes YOUR US tax VERY high. She should simply join you on your 1040, in which case she would report the income, but get credit for the US tax.

She must also file a departure return in Canada leaving in July 2014.
