Employer didn't report income tax we paid. Now owe money!

Post by Bluetoe »

My husband got a tax refund last year. This week he got a letter stating he owed money. We think his employer did not report that my husband paid CPP, EI, and importantly, income tax. We have pay stubs to prove he did. Govt says he only paid $800 in taxes, which is the exact amount from when he was sick and received EI. Now he owes the refund back, plus pay what the govt says he owes, plus interest. He already called his former boss, who is asking his accountant.
What are our options? Help appreciated!

What does your T4 say?
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

The T4 has the amount of income tax deducted from the year's pay! Which is the amount we entered when we filed our taxes! This is why we think the employer didn't report correctly, or at all!

This is from 2013 correct? CRA would not have gotten back to you so fast on 2014.

The CRA guide has steps to follow when employer has stated false information.

All the best.
