Back to Canada - all income in US can I use 1040?
I am canadian citizen returning back to Canada after working for many years in US. Worked in US all year till dec 14th 2013. All my income is in US . Did work for last two weeks of 2013 in Canada , but got paid in early Jan 2014. So there is no W2 income in canada. Is it best for me to use 1040 MFJ? Do I have to file a canada return even though there is no connected income? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
You should definitely file MFJ full year. Were you issued a T4? If so, include it on your MFJ, and exempt it thru 2555 (you may have to wait a year to do this). If not, no problem: it is considered 2014 income.
If you got a T4 you should file a Cdn return. Even if you did not, it would be good for you to file a Newcomer return, with December arrival date, to announce your return to Canada.
Since you have been in US many years. look over the expatriation rules. You may have some issues there.

After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

back in canada after many years in US
hello nelsona,
Appreciate your reply. I have been in US from 2008 till 2013- about six years. Does that complicate expatriation rules for me? Once again, thanks much for your crisp reply!
