US citizen moved back to US from Canada (Quebec) in 2013

Post by vik »

I used to work in Montreal but moved to Boston in August 2013. I'm a bit unclear on what my provincial tax situation is. I'm a US citizen and have no residential ties to Canada.

When I tried to do my taxes on HRBlock.ca, it seems to suggest that not being a resident of Quebec on December 31 means that I have no tax obligations in Quebec.

Google searches on this topic don't seem to turn up much useful info other than that one owes taxes to the province he or she lives in on the 31st of December of a given tax year. I can't figure out what happens if you don't live in Canada anymore.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ufile.ca will do a better job. You are a resident of QC on the last day of residency, so, yes, you do have tax obligation to QC.

You are considerd a departing resident, as long as you identify yourself as that in the tax software, and put a departure date, it should open up all the required files.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
