Dual Citizen Son going to Grad School in Canada

Post by tony9409 »

My Son has been accepted into grad school in Canada (2yr program) and he has Canadian and US Citizenship. His permanent address is in the USA, but he will be out of the country for more than 180 days. He is also getting a scholarship from the school for ~$6000/yr and he would like to work part time there for some spending cash.

How will his taxes need to be filed...where do we report the scholarship and work income. I presume he'd file taxes in US and Canada with any Canadian tax paid reported on US return. Are there any special declarations to be made.

We will be moving some money to a Canadian bank account we've kept while he is there so checks can be written to cover his rent and other expenses

Any help to clarify would be appreciated.

thanks

Since he is a US citizen, he reports all income from any source to IRS in any case.

If the scholarship is from US, he would not necessarily have to report it in Canada, but if it is from Canada he does. Any wages he would get in canada would be reported in Canada.

The days he spends in Canada is not really an issue, since he is a student, and students generally maintain their tax residency in where they live, not where they go to school.
