I receive a Superannuation(pension) from British Columbia.

Post by carslo »

I live in the USA and started receiving my Superannuation Pension from British Columbia this past August. The 15% Canadian tax is withheld by the Canadian Government.
My husband did our taxes here in the US and we have always received money back now we have to pay a substantial amount in Federal taxes. I thought I did not have to pay additional taxes on my pensions from Canada? Any help would be appreciated. I am 55 yrs old and am now worried about when I start to collect my CPP from Canada.

You were probably receiving money back because he was having sufficient money withheld for US income to cover any extra taxes.

The entire pension ammount is reported on your 1040, and then you take creit for the 15% tax on a form 1116. There will be additioanl tax to pay. pension income from Canada is not exempt from US taxation.

On the other hand, when you collect CPP and OAS from Canda, it will only be taxed in US, not Canada.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
