California State Taxes and RRSP

Post by panek »

First year filing California state taxes as a part-year resident.

I have a $13,000 Canadian RRSP. I filed 8891 to exempt federal taxation.

My understanding is that RRSP earnings are taxable in California and must be claimed on 540NR and added to gross income.

My RRSP earned $685. Is this the value I enter on line 16 of the CA 540NR (pensions and annuities)?

Thank you once again for your help Nelson.

Nevermind, found it in the instructions. I will add it to Line 8. Please let me know if that is incorrect.

Hi, panek! It depends on what kind of income the RRSP produces. Interest, dividends, and capital gains should be reported in column C of lines 8, 9, and 13 of Schedule CA, respectively.

The key publication is FTB Pub. 1001 (Supplemental Guidelines to California Adjustments), which is available on the ftb.ca.gov website.

Hope this helps, and good luck filing your taxes!
