declare Canadian RRSP account on schedule B Part III??

Post by 1canuck »

I am a Canadian residing in the US for the last several years. I have a RRSP account in Canada (value less than US$ 10K). I have never declared that in Schedule B part III (thinking that signature authority means having a checking account). I've always indicated that I never had any financial interest or the authority in any foreign country.
Is this incorrect?

I always file the form 8891 with my 1040 though.

Can anyone please advise?

After doing some search on this forum, I think these are the answers to Schedule B Part III in my case - Can anybody please confirm?

============================================
- the question 7a (i) is "Yes" in my case.
- the question 7(a) - ii --> "No" (I do not have to file form TD F 90-22.1, since the amount is less than 10K)
- 7(b) -- Do not have to answer

- 8 --> "Yes" since I was the grantor of the RRSP plan.
But I do not have to file form 3520 (since Form 8891 has been filed), right?

Also, like another poster had said previously - "if the IRS feels that i should have answered yes to this question, then i am sure they will identify it....i cannot see there being a penalty or a fine for this as i have already filled out the 8891 for all past years."

I am planning to fix it from this year and forget about past returns.. does it sound ok?
