As one of the many " accidental Americans" on this board I went through the agony of learning about IRS rules and the ins and outs of myriad forms when I first learned about the requirement to file last July. A big thanks to nelsona and the rest of the crew here for their invaluable help.
I ended up filing back returns for six years and today received the sweetest refund cheque I have ever seen - a $300 cheque from the US Treasury for tax year 2008 when the US paid a "recovery rebate".
I did not owe any US taxes and have never paid the IRS a nickel, so the $300 (plus the cost of processing all my back returns) seems a just quid pro quo for the pain imposed by the IRS on accidental Americans.
Just think if you had kids! you would get $1000/kid/yr
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
This is great! Did you know about this program when you filed? ie. was there some box to check off?
I back filed 6 years in November of 2011 - I'm hoping I get the same sweet deal!
