I've just completed six years of back taxes and FBARs and wanted to extend my thanks to Nelsona for his/her contribution to this forum. I don't know who you are or what your interest in this is, but your input has been extremely valuable - in fact, one of the very few bright spots in this unpleasant ordeal.

could you please let me know to which year you back filed your 6 year FBAR? 2005 or 2006?

Today IRS announced new rules in general 6 years back filing of FBAR and 3 years 1040 for those who have not complied and owe little or no tax, it seems Nelsona had it right on the button now ITS is making this policy.

Does this mean one only need to backfill 3 years of 8891 + 1040X?

If you owe no tax, yes. Otherwise 6 years.
