Complicated Canadian Tax Issue

Post by leescarter »

Hello,

I have a bit of a complicated situation. I started the 2011 Tax year living in the UK. I worked for a UK firm and paid taxes to the HMRC. In June 2011 I came to Canada and started working as a Freelance Writer where I stayed until March 2012.

My understanding of the UK-Canada Tax treaty is that I do not have to pay any tax to the CRA that I have already paid in the UK while living there and I become a Canadian Tax resident on my return to Canada in June.

Am I right in thinking that I only need to include my freelance work from June-December 31st in my Canadian Tax return?

I am no longer in Canada so I am considering hiring an accountant who would make sure everything is filed correctly, I realise I have left it late. Would anyone have any recommendations on how I should proceed with my Tax return? Is there a particular accountant who specialises in this sort of return?

Thank you in advance
