paper filing US and Canada returns

Post by lanman2000 »

Do you guys typically include a copy of the other country's T-Slips / W2s and actual tax return in the mailing?

For example, when you mail your US returns do you include a copy of your Canadian T1 and Canadian T-slips from wages / bank interest?

I included T4 and T2202A forms with the US returns, and 1099-DIV and 1099-B forms with the Canadian returns. However, I was not claiming a foreign tax credit in either country.

From the CRA:
"Filing a paper return
Attach your completed Form T2209, Federal Foreign Tax Credits and documents that show the foreign taxes you paid. If you paid taxes to the United States, attach your W-2 information slip, U.S. 1040 return, and any other supporting documents that apply."

My understanding is that the IRS doesn't want any Canadian information slips such as T4s or T5s.

I've never sent any Canadian documentation to the IRS.

IRS does not want any documentation otehr than US slips which have US taxes witheld: W-2, 1099-R.

CRA wants BOTH your W-2 and 1040 if you claim a tax credit. The 1040 is to ascertain your taxrate, and the W-2 is to determine any FICA and pension payments.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

I'm assuming this means just the 2 page 1040 right? Not all 40 pages of schedules/forms, etc...

Yeah, just the main 2-page 1040. But you should include the state/city main 1040 pages as well if you filed state/city returns.

I received a letter from CRA requesting copies of my state and city 1040s to verify any refunds that I may have received from those taxes at the end of the year before they would approve the FTC. That was a while ago, maybe 8 or 9 years ago. So maybe they've stopped requiring the state/city forms since then, or maybe I just had an overzealous agent handle my file that year.

Either way, I've been including them every year since without any problems.
