This summer, to "catch up" on U.S. filing, I sent in 3 U.S. tax returns, and FBARS going back to 2003. I sent the FBARS with a cover letter explaining that I'd never sent them in before because I didn't know I was supposed to (I've lived in Canada since I was a baby, and have no ties to the U.S.)
I didn't send anything with the tax returns - just submitted them.
I've read recently that the IRS now frowns on this, and all returns should be "noisy." Does anyone have any additional information on this? Is it true?
I guess I could re-send the FBAR letter to the address I sent my tax returns to. I just want to know if this is necessary/wise.
Note that I wouldn't be revising my returns. I still don't owe any taxes to the U.S. I pay all my taxes here, in Canada.
Catching up with U.S. filing...did I send in the right info?
