Tuition transfer

Post by brianbbc »

Any guidance for transferring post secondary education tuition (provincial and federal) amounts to parents tax returns? Assuming the child doesn’t owe taxes for the year, transferring the maximum allowed amount to parent would offset parents tax burdens. Or would it be more prudent to let the child accumulate the tuition amount for future years when they are fully employed and can use it on their return. My thought is since it is a tax credit of 15% , not a deduction, it might be better to take the credit on the parents return now instead of later. I assume the way it works is for a $5000 tuition deduction, you’ll get a 15% credit or $750. Seems like getting the credit now is better than later as the amount would be the same, as long as you have a good family relationship. Or am I missing something and say the child has a higher income in the future and would benefit more then, thus postponing the tuition credit for now ?
