RRSP tax implications for resident of Georgia

Post by Jmk »

Hello, hopefully a simple question, but what are the tax implications for having a Canadian RRSP but living in the state of Georgia?

I moved from Canada to Georgia 35 years ago and I've had an RRSP, now a RRIF, for the entire time I've been here. There are no Georgia-specific taxes on RRSP's/RRIF's. I fill out Federal Form 8938 and the FBAR every year showing the specifics of the Canadian account. There are no tax implications until you start withdrawing the funds at which point, they are taxed at the federal and state level. Any Canadian taxes withheld at the source (15% or 25%) can then be claimed as a US foreign tax credit.
