Married file jointly vs separately

Post by tony »

Canadian after working in california for several years under TN visa filing tax jointly,
1. can I begining 2024 filing separately? (we're not divorced)
2. then, after some time say 2026 filing jointly again?
3. a friend saying that once you file jointly, it can't be changed until divorce, is this true?

thanks

Couples can choose each year whether to file jointly or separately.

Can't think of a reason for you to do this though.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

You can amend a return to change from married filing separate to married filing joint but not from married filing joint to married filing separate unless you do so prior to the original filing deadline without extensions. So, once you file a joint return you can not change it to a separate return if the filing deadline has already passed.
