Filing NR in year of arrival to US impact Canadian residency?

Post by bluesky »

If I arrive in the US in Sept of 2021, can I file 1040 NR for the whole year and CRA does not recognize me as tax resident after I leave? Or does filing 1040NR for the whole year mean CRA still treats me as a tax resident through rest of 2021 even though I left in September?

Unless you have a borderline non-residency case, how you file in US the first year, ie. filing 1040NR rather than dual-status (1040NR/1040) has no bearing on whether CRA will accept your September departure date.

"Borderline" in this instance would be, for example, leaving an empty house, or leaving spouse behind far past your departure.
