Cross-Border Tax Videos

Post by Phil Hogan, CA »

Hi everyone

I thought this would be a great place to get some feedback. I've been doing some cross-border videos and would love to get some feedback.

Here are some examples:

Here is the main channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/PhilHoganCPA/videos

Looking forward to you feedback, thanks

Hi Phil
Big Fan.

I have listened to almost all your youtube podcasts.
I really liked the slides with the questions, it makes it easy to navigate through the podcast.
Your explanations are ALWAYS correct, which is so important, as someone will run with that misinformation, and it gets spread.

You avoid going into too much detail, like the mechanics, say, of a re-sourced 1116, would be too complex for the general viewer, and software handles this anyways.

I also agree with your opinion on various late/non filing penalties (for forms that don't even give rise to any tax), given that the IRS fails to collect legal taxes to the tune of billions of dollars yearly.

Thanks, Phil, I looked at some of your videos and think they're excellent. You explain clearly some topics that I struggled with in the past, e.g. not paying SE tax as a Canadian resident and re-sourcing of a US private pension. I was pretty happy that I have avoided all your "common mistakes in expat tax returns", however your podcast would have made it a lot less painful to figure these things out!

One thing I noticed is that in several places you mention the necessity of filing an 8833. I have never filed one of those, because my/spouse's treaty positions all fall within the list of exceptions to the 8833 requirement, as listed e.g. here https://www.irs.gov/individuals/interna ... y-benefits. I daresay it's better to overstate rather than than understate filing requirements, but perhaps I might suggest you occasionally mention there are exceptions to the filing requirement for 8833.

Right Maggie.
As I have pointed out many times here, 8833 is almost never required for "regular" individual filers, but it is always useful to file as it EXPLAINS what you are doing. It is especially useful for US-source income that has a tax slip issued, as IRS will use their info (SS benefits for example) and override your inputs unless you file 8833.

Thanks, nelsona. Seeing as I'm starting to collect SS benefits, next tax season I will add in the 8833.
