End of US Residency

Post by bvadrich »

Hello,

After working and living in the US for a couple years I returned to Canada. Here is a short breakdown of event.

On January 5th, 2021, I signed a FIRPTA affidavit certifying my US person status. This was connected with the sale that closed on January 19.
On January 16th, 2021, I left the USA for the last time.
On January 19, 2021 my sale of a house in the USA closed.
On March 31, 2021, I stopped working for the US firm that had been employing me in the US on a TN visa.

When did I stop being a US resident for tax purposes?

Thank you.

It would be the day you established residential ties in Canada, which I assume was January 16.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
