Remotely working for US company in Canada as a dual citizen?

Post by mangolassi »

Hi everyone,

Currently I'm working for a large American company--my role is remote so I am considering moving back to Canada as I'm dual US/Canadian citizen.

I'm wondering what the tax implications are here. Would I be able to live in Canada while being paid through a US payroll? Or is that not a possibility if residency is established? Is there ever a chance of getting double taxed?

I believe my company has some employees in Canada already (in other departments) but pre-COVID this role was not remote and required being in the states.

Thanks!

If you move to Canada you shoudl be placed on a Cdn payroll.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

I did this in 2016. Moved back to Canada as a dual citizen while keeping my US job remotely. US manager briefly assumed they could just keep my on US payroll, but was quickly disabused of this notion by payroll and HR departments. Luckily the company had/has operations in Canada, therefore it was a bit of a hassle but not too difficult to move me over to Canadian payroll. Like you would be, I'm the only person in my department in Canada. Furthermore I'm paid on an Ontario payroll though located in BC. (It's correct for the company to do this. Since the only Canadian office is in Ontario they withhold according to Ontario rules and things get adjusted to BC when I file my tax return). Good luck to you. It can be done!
